Apafi Manor
Catherine was asked by the EMINSCU Trust to be involved in this fascinating restoration project in Transylvania. The brief was to research the garden of the recently restored seventeenth century manor house, built as a hunting lodge on the outskirts of the village of Malancrav.
Through a mixture of archival research and archaeology on site, the original layout of paths and the central pool was revealed. Building on this, the simple garden layout was inspired by other continental Baroque gardens and the work of Russell Page. The garden had to be low maintenance and able to withstand the extremes of the Transylvanian climate.
